This is one of five (5) lighthouses on Martha's Vineyard and is located near North Water Street on Edgartown, MA harbor. This light along with East Chop and Gay Head lights on Martha's Vineyard, were scheduled to be destroyed in the mid-1980s. The three lights were saved through Congressional testimony presented by Vineyard Environmental Research, Institute's (VERI) President, William Waterway Marks. The United States of America licensed control of the three lighthouses to VERI in 1986. Soon after, VERI restored and opened the three lighthouses to the public. After ten years, VERI transferred their license to the Martha's Vineyard Museum. Following the transfer, William Waterway Marks served as Chair of the Museum's Lighthouse Committee.
