Object history
Deutsch: In der Geschichte von Siegel und Wappen Breisachs spiegelt sich die politische Geschichte der Stadt. Das älteste Siegel, an Urkunden um 1230 erhalten, zeigt einen Adler. Breisach hatte damals den Charakter einer Reichsstadt. Wenig später erscheint die Muttergottes mit Kind über einer Torarchitektur thronend im Siegel. Stadtherr war zu dieser Zeit der Bischof von Basel, und Maria ist die Patronin des Bistums Basel. Nachdem König Rudolf von Habsburg 1273 die Stadt wieder ans Reich gezogen hatte, führte sie erneut den Adler in ihren Siegeln. Das Wappen der Stadt ist seit Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts der Sechsberg aus dem Wappen der das Oberschultheißenamt verwaltenden Herren von Grünenberg. Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts begegnet erstmals die Kombination von Siegel- und Wappenbild: Der Adler wird mit dem Sechsberg im Brustschild oder auf dem Sechsberg stehend dargestellt. Das heutige Wappen legte man 1955 fest, es wurde zusammen mit der Flagge am 5. November 1956 vom Innenministerium verliehen.
