Object history
Deutsch: Schon im ältesten, seit 1531 nachweisbaren Gerichtssiegel von Riegel ist wie in allen späteren Typaren und Farbstempeln ein Mannesrumpf mit Kopfbinde oder Lorbeerkranz abgebildet. Zum Teil ist die Figur in einen Wappenschild gesetzt. In einem Grenzbegehungsprotokoll von 1591 wird das Wappen- und Siegelbild als Heidenkopf erklärt. Die erst seit dem 19. Jahrhundert wieder bekannte und durch zahlreiche Bodenfunde dokumentierte römische Siedlungsgeschichte des Ortes lebte früher offenbar lediglich in der Sage von der einst heidnischen Stadt fort, die einen kleinen König (lat. regulus, Wortspiel mit dem Ortsnamen) gehabt habe. Sein Brustbild sei in ihr Wappen übergegangen. So erklärt sich das für einen Marktflecken ungewöhnliche Wappenbild. Seine heutige Zeichnung und Tingierung wurden 1895 festgelegt. Die Flagge wurde am 2. August 1989 vom Landratsamt Emmendingen verliehen.
