Object history
Deutsch: Der springende Hirsch ist ein heraldisches Forst- und Jagdsymbol und verweist auf die ausgedehnten Waldgebiete in der Umgebung von Unterammergau und die früheren landesherrlichen Jagden. Das ehemalige königliche Jagdhaus �Wilder Jäger� liegt im Halbammertal. Unterammergau ist die waldreichste Gemeinde Bayerns. Die Landwirte bewirtschaften meist nur Grünland. Auf den Wald- und Wiesenbestand spielt die Feldtingierung Grün an. Der silberne Boden deutet auf die im 15. Jahrhundert entdeckten Wetzstein-Schieferflöze in der Gemeinde hin. Der flache Hammer und der Wetzstein symbolisieren das bedeutende Gewerbe der Wetzsteinmacher mit bis zu 50 wasserbetriebenen Schleifmühlen entlang der Klamm der Lainen. In Unterammergau war früher die bedeutendste Wetzsteinherstellung Deutschlands beheimatet; um 1900 wurden hier jährlich 250 000 Wetzsteine gefertigt). Durch das Aufkommen der künstlichen Wetzsteine und den verstärkten Einsatz von Mähmaschinen statt Sensen fand das über Jahrhunderte florierende Gewerbe um 1950 ein Ende.
