Object history
Deutsch: Der Markt Weitnau wünschte 1836 ein eigenes Wappen. Der Entwurf zeigte unter dem Schildhaupt mit den bayerischen Rauten einen Allgäuer Bauern mit Sense auf einer weiten Aue und vor einer Gebirgslandschaft. König Ludwig I. wünschte eine mehr heraldische Gestaltung und verlieh 1838 das Wappen in seiner jetzigen Form. Der Bauer sollte natürlich einen Bewohner von Weitnau darstellen. Der Heraldiker Otto Hupp hat ihm allerdings eine fränkische Tracht gegeben, die er seitdem trägt.
