Le site de Chambray est à l'origine un poste fortifié dominant le gué de l'Iton, zone frontalière entre la Normandie rattachée à la couronne d'Angleterre et le comté de Chartres. Le manoir primitif fut abandonné vers 1210. Une forteresse, bâtie par la suite, fut rasée à la fin de la guerre de Cent Ans. Jacques de Chambray dit '" le Grand Veneur " fut célèbre dans l'Europe entière pour son équipage de chasse à courre qui prit 2466 cerfs. En souvenir du dernier descendant de la famille de Chambray, la donation faite à l'État permit d'installer un centre de formation agricole.
